The field of Ed could definitely stand to be more balanced..

best,
gpThe New Englanderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06201310505648616855noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1665619563748706349.post-66629408149206485622009-04-20T21:02:00.000-07:002009-04-20T21:02:00.000-07:00Off your Shakespeare point: so true. I've never been able to make heads or tails of one of his plays reading them, but seeing a good performance of them is magical.Jon and Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10387906860079789219noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1665619563748706349.post-57585155713257546632009-04-20T17:49:00.000-07:002009-04-20T17:49:00.000-07:00Cliff,
Exactly. No one's found any silver bullet...Cliff,

Exactly. No one's found any silver bullets or magical solutions.

But just as any institution (like the military) shouldn't be dominated by the right, nothing should be dominated by the left, either. What scares me is that people in Ed just have this Groupthink Gospel that no one can challenge.

To the degree that I can have any influence on a young person it's to be organized, work hard, and don't think of yourself as a victim. It's old-fashioned but it can apply anywhere..The New Englanderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06201310505648616855noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1665619563748706349.post-88064651167837359742009-04-17T17:56:00.000-07:002009-04-17T17:56:00.000-07:00Metrics are important. Even the 1.5 mile run. ...Metrics are important. Even the 1.5 mile run. Thank you Doctor Cooper.

One Metric I have used is to look at when Judge W. Arthur Garrity Jr. imposed bussing to end segregation in Boston Schools, segregation that was deemed to provide unequal educational opportunities. That was back in 1974—35 years ago. If a child entered school that year at age 6 (first grade) and made it all the way through and graduated and got married upon graduation and quickly got pregnant and had a child, that child would have entered school, graduated, gotten married and had a child of her own who is just now ready to enter a school system that is still under-performing.

Of course, there are METCO and Charter Schools. But, the overall system seems not to be working. Are there socio-economic factors at work? For sure. But, we haven't figured out how to educate these children. Could we at least admit that?

Regards — CliffC R Kriegerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10563658418464959198noreply@blogger.com
