Worcester's Problem, Everyone's Problem

I understand that Worcester City officials are extremely frustrated right now -- the police details outside the funeral home are costing them roughly 10k/day.

They want something to be done, but the entire reason why it's so complicated is that no municipality would want to take on a cost like that indefinitely.

Robert Healy is a very smart man (Has to be...he was a Mayor's Aide in Lowell, right?)  His decision not to allow for the plot usage in Cambridge wasn't rooted in intolerance or hatred.  It may have been rooted in respect for the victims, however...AND the practicality issue.  If he says "Yes" then he's dealing with the strange brew of MANY daily protesters mixed with a few daily shrine-worshippers indefinitely (or at least until he passes the torch to Rich Rossi).

But the point is that this is complicated.  As time goes on, we'll have a better playbook to draw from.  For now, there's way more to it than just saying that certain people are being idiots, or that others are being intolerant (oh, but the people mistakenly taunting the families of mourners in Worcester who have nothing to do with the bombers are idiots).

It's obviously not a simple issue.

  1. I demur.  Much as we may loathe "Speedbump", he was a fellow human being.  If the Sandy Hook murderer gets a burial, so should Mr Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

Maybe this was part of a plot to conduct a series of attacks in what is Domestic Terrorism.  Likely, but not the only possibility.  Perhaps Mr Tsarnaev operated as a lone wolf.  Perhaps he was insane.  I am open to all possibilities, but tend toward Domestic Terrorism, because that is the most serious possibility.  If it is being orchestrated by AQAP and they can do it again and again, we are in for some nasty times.  For sure it was not "workplace violence", as is being suggested for the Fort Hood shooter.  But, it doesn't change the fact that everyone should get a burial.

Bury him and be done with it.

In the mean time, I am ashamed for Cambridge.

(On the other hand, given how the Boston Mayor was out hogging camera time in Watertown, perhaps he should offer up a plot.)

  2. What kind of middle ground is there, though? What if a deal could be worked out (very, very quietly) with the uncle to take the body and do a proper burial, but at a site that doesn't get marked?

That way you avoid the spectacle of creating a lightning rod for protesters, jihadists, looky-loos, etc. I think that's what the towns and town administrators are afraid of. How much longer can Worcester foot a 10k/day bill?

I think there's a middle ground to be found here..

  3. There is a middle ground, but no one will be happy about it.

    Even Presidential assassins get buried.

    Is this now pride?

I already have my plot at Saint Joseph's Cemetery in Chelmsford.

So let's say I do something horrific, at the scale of these terrorists. Can I be denied burial in that plot? I don't remember anything in the burial contract, but I was the second signature and 13 at the time. It's a pretty sweet spot in a middle of a section, underneath a tree that looks directly to a huge Crucifix.

    No specifics.

    Which is really good.
